Now ask that question again. How many UNWORN bras do you have? Whether old and once-loved but no longer in circulation or those bras you bought thinking 'I really need an orange balcony lace one' and then never wore or maybe wore 'just the once'?
I'm guessing the answer won't be very different. Of my 17 bras, only 4 are in daily wash-and-wear circulation (yes, yes, I admit it: the comfy M+S ones in varying shades of flesh tones), with three more lacy, not v comfy ones putting in an occasional appearance. So that leaves ten - ten! - that are never, and I mean NEVER worn. Until I looked last night I couldn't have even told you most of them existed.
Contrary to appearances, this doesn't make me a mad bra hoarder, I am, in fact, relatively normal. Because, according to Oxfam, British women are guilty of hoarding nearly £1.2billion worth of unworn bras, at a cool £16 a time. Ok, so I'm a little more excessive than some. (Surprise!) Ms average has nine bras in her drawer but only wears five or six.
The point is, what do you do with the ones you never wear? There's something, well, intimate about a bra (even one you've never worn) that feels odd to throw it away, so they languish there for years, when they could be giving some other woman who can't afford one some pleasure - not to mention some support.
That's why Oxfam have launched their , to encourage us to donate our unworn bras. Their aim? To collect over one million bras throughout this month.
Oxfam will then send the bras to their unique Frip Ethique project in Senegal which sorts and trades second hand clothes and provides employment for local women. Bras are complex to manufacture and so few developing countries make their own - making them hard to come by, expensive and sought after. (Other bras will be sold through Oxfam's UK shops.)
So let's start now. If we all donate even half of our unworn bras (yes, even the 'maybe' pile) Oxfam will be well on the way to meeting its target. Here's how:
1 - Take your unworn/unused bras to your local Oxfam shop.
2 - As part of the ongoing M&S/Oxfam clothes exchange, any bra hunters donating an M&S bra will receive a £5 voucher (ts and cs apply).
3 - no local Oxfam? Go to
