Hotel Schweizerhof, Bern, Switzerland

Perfectly positioned for a foodie city break

manages to put Bern, Switzerland on the map as a destination for more than just skiing.

We disappeared to the Hotel Schweizerhof for a long weekend on a whim that Bern may have more to offer than just easy access to the slopes. Happily, we were right.

Thanks to the Eurostar and the superb Swiss train network getting to the Hotel from London was almost easier than my daily commute. The hotel is situated right in the heart of Bern, the perfect location for exploring all the city has to offer.

The hotel is 160 years old and has long been the place to stay in Bern (hosting Grace Kelly on occasion) but a renovation two years ago has elevated this historic venue to new, luxurious heights.

The hotel is home to every indulgent touch you desire. Polished floors, sweeping staircases, huge, squishy beds and views across beautiful Bern. There are also quirky, loveable touches like the hotel's beehives (you can taste their very own honey) and a rooftop restaurant enclosed in a heated, glass tube.

We started our visit with a booking at said rooftop restaurant: Tubbo. The views are outstanding and while simple, the raclette menu is all you want on your first night in Switzerland. We were supplied with a hot plate and an endless supply of delicious Swiss cheese. Nothing short of heaven.

After breaking our fast in the hotel's charming restaurant we headed out to explore Bern and found a city filled with chocolate shops (dangerous), cobbled walkways, antique clock shops and cute cafes.

You can either spend all your time pottering around Bern or return to the hotel to make the most of the gorgeous spa. Your best option? Stay for two nights and do both.

Make sure you book a table at Jack's Brasserie, the hotel's restaurant, at least one of the nights. Leather booths, traditional Swiss fare and friendly service create a wonderfully relaxed andintimate atmosphere. Don't leave without trying their famous schnitzel.

Stay at the Hotel Schweizerhof Bern from CHF 439 per night in a deluxe room (approximately £345), including breakfast and access to the spar.
