You might think that the just the act of going on holiday is self-care enough, but if you're anything like us, travelling doesn't necessarily equate to wellness.

Sometimes it can take a while to really feel you can switch off and lots of us are probably guilty of quickly checking our social media, or our emails, instead of reading or snoozing on the beach. Plus, if you're travelling as a family you've still got childcare to do.

If you're on a city break it can be even harder to relax and reinvigorate yourself with so much pavement pounding to be done and crowds to manoeuvre. So how DO you make sure you rest and restore on your next trip?

From making time to have fun to shutting the world out for some R&R, here are five tips for upping your self-care on holiday.

1. Make time in your morning

Whatever time you wake up in the morning (...or afternoon), make time to check in with yourself to take stock of how you feel that day. Do you want to go for an energising run, practise yoga on the beach or dive into that book you've been meaning to start for months? Spend time with your thoughts in the morning and don't rush into a full day of sightseeing.

2. Have fun with it

Looking after yourself doesn't have to mean quiet days in fluffy white robes, sipping fresh green juices. Restoring your mind and soul can be fun — after all, what better way to shake off your anxieties than to do something totally new and exciting?

3. Overpack

Listen to Marie Kondo — if it sparks joy, pack it. Take your sheet masks, hair conditioners, the latest issue of Red magazine as well as the six books you're hoping to finish on the beach. Aside from your ticket's luggage restrictions, there's no reason to pack a capsule suitcase if you want to make the most of your holiday.

4. Shut the world out

With so many demands from work, family and friends, taking care of number one can often fall to the bottom of the list. This year, it’s time to pay attention to you. Clear some time from a busy schedule of sightseeing, sunbathing and mountain climbing to make the most of an indulgent spa treatment or even just a long, luxurious nap.

5. Eat and enjoy

When you're in a new place with a new cuisine at your fingertips, take advantage of the new flavours and don't feel guilty. Buy fresh fruit from the markets, stick (reusable) straws in coconuts and definitely order dessert. Seafood? Eat it.
